Singapore Dependant's Pass Guide

Eligibility, Application & Work Rights

What is the Dependant’s Pass?

The Singapore Dependant’s Pass (DP) allows the legally married spouse and children of Employment Pass (EP) or S Pass holders to live in Singapore. It strengthens family unity and makes relocation easier for foreign professionals.

In this guide, you’ll learn the eligibility requirements, application process, work rights, and key benefits of the DP.

Who Can Apply for a Dependant’s Pass?

To qualify for a Singapore Dependant’s Pass, both the main work pass holder (sponsor) and the dependent must meet specific requirements set by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Sponsor (EP or S Pass Holder) Requirements

  • Must hold a valid EP or S Pass.

  • Must earn a fixed monthly salary of at least S$6,000.

  • Employer or approved employment agency must submit the DP application.

  • Dependants who can apply include:

    • Spouse: Must be legally married.

    • Children: Unmarried children under 21 years old, including legally adopted children.

If family members don’t qualify, they may apply for a Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) instead.

How to Apply for a Dependant’s Pass

The process is straightforward, but careful preparation helps avoid delays.

Step 1: Prepare Documents

  • Dependant’s passport details page.
  • Marriage certificate (for spouses).
  • Birth or adoption certificates (for children).
  • Proof of vaccinations for children, if required.
  • English translations for documents not in English.

Step 2: Submit the Application

The employer or agency applies through MOM’s myMOM portal.

Step 3: Wait for Processing

MOM usually processes DP applications in about three weeks.

Step 4: Receive Approval

If approved, MOM issues an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter.

Step 5: Complete Registration

After arrival, the dependant may need to register fingerprints and a photo at MOM’s Employment Pass Services Centre.

Step 6: Collect the DP Card

Finally, the DP card is delivered to the employer after registration.

 Dependant’s Pass for Newborns

Newborn babies of EP or S Pass holders also qualify. Parents should:

  1. Apply for a DP within six weeks of birth.
  2. Register the birth with ICA to obtain a Special Pass (42 days validity).
  3. Secure the baby’s passport and submit the DP application before the Special Pass expires.

By acting quickly, parents ensure their baby remains legally in Singapore without interruptions.

Can Dependant’s Pass Holders Work in Singapore?

Work rights for DP holders changed on May 1, 2021. They no longer receive automatic work authorization with a Letter of Consent (LOC).

Instead, DP holders must apply for their own work pass.

  • Employment options: EP, S Pass, or Work Permit.

  • Employer’s responsibility: The hiring company submits the application.

  • Business owners: May apply for a special Letter of Consent.

  • Status change: Once a DP holder secures an EP or S Pass, their DP is cancelled.

  • Work Permit exception: If approved, the DP holder keeps both passes, but the Work Permit validity depends on the DP.

Benefits of the Dependant’s Pass

  •  Keeps your family together in Singapore.

  •  Provides access to healthcare and education services.

  •  Offers a clear pathway for dependants to work, provided they obtain their own pass.

Limitations

  •  No automatic work rights.

  •  DP validity depends entirely on the sponsor’s work pass.

  •  Sponsor must meet the salary requirement of at least S$6,000 per month.

The Singapore Dependant’s Pass remains one of the most important options for professionals who want to bring their families to Singapore. Although work rules have tightened, the DP still promotes family unity and provides a way for dependants to integrate into the workforce.
